The Space Cowboys and the Unimog kick off SnowFest 2013 on Friday at Squaw.

Friday, March 1

Best Reason to Leave the Kids with the Sitter (Truckee version)
What: First Fridays
When: Friday evening
Where: Downtown Truckee

Many of the downtown shops stay open late and offer treats, specials, and live music. Bring a t-shirt, bag, tea towel or piece of fabric into Bespoke between 5 – 8pm, and they will silk screen it on site. After you get your shopping and mingling in, head first to CoffeeBar and then to Dragonfly to keep the party going.

At 6:30, CoffeeBar presents Alex Kelly – Black White Raw, a live art/live music event that promises to “push your comfort level a bit.” $10 entry; beer and wine will be served, 21+ More info on the CoffeeBar blog.

Later in the evening, Dragonfly kicks off its First Friday Music Series with a live set by local duo, Live Robot (Brian Hess and Steve Saturno) from 10pm – 1am.

Reason to go: It’s not often an art exhibit that makes you blush rolls into town.
Reason not to go: The SnowFest party kicks off the same night with the Torchlight Parade and Space Cowboys After-Party out at Squaw.

Best Reason to Leave the Kids with the Sitter (North Tahoe version)
What: Weird & Mirrored
When: 9pm
Where:  The Biltmore

A night of bass and art. Weird & Mirrored will feature live painting and local DJs Zeb Early and Little Miss Mixer, among others. $10 at the door.

Reason to go: Honestly, I’m not too sure what this is going to be, but it sounds super cool.
Reason not to go: See above.

Sunday, March 2

Best Reason Not to Go Out Saturday Night
The 37th Annual Great Ski Race
When: 9am
Where: Tahoe City to Truckee

The Great Ski Race is the main fundraising event for the Tahoe Nordic Search & Rescue Team and is one of the largest Nordic ski races west of the Mississippi. Race proceeds are used primarily to purchase equipment for the Team and to support winter survival and avalanche education. The Great Ski Race has grown from 60 racers in 1977 to more than 800 racers every year since 1999. In 2005 all records were broken, with 1109 registered racers, 1029 finishers, and the fastest men’s and women’s times yet!

Reason to go: Post-race Sierra Nevada beer is included with your registration fee.
Reason not to: You’re hung over from the always-fun, ‘80s cover band, Tainted Love, playing Saturday night at the CBC. 9pm in the Crown Room.
