There's a new trend in the creative community called upcycling, and it's making an appearance at Truckee Thursday. Started by Amy and Craig Davies, Rescued Wine features repurposed glass products made from recycled wine bottles. Having been in the candle making business for 20 years with Tahoe Candle, Davies started this new business venture after feeling the need to do something different after the birth of his daughter.

Upcycling involves taking waste materials and turning them into useful, environmentally friendly products. Each week, Rescued Wine visits businesses in the Reno-Tahoe area like Squeeze In, Atlantis, and Silver Legacy to collect their empty wine bottles. They sort, clean, and cut the bottles that would otherwise go to landfill and repurpose the glass into a variety of home products like candles, drinking glasses, soap dishes, and jewelry.

Rescued Wine specializes in scented candles, which come in nine different wine-inspired fragrances, from Chardonnay to Pinot Noir, and cost $28. Amy was inspired by her love of wine a few years ago and combined it with Craig's love of candles; the company has been thriving for the past 2 1/2 years both in Truckee and nationwide. Rescued Wine is currently offered

Roxxy McQueen has been making all-natural, mostly vegan cosmetics like lotion, face wash, lip balm, and soap by hand in her Sparks home for seven years. Her business, Roxxy's Star Cosmetics has been at Truckee Thursdays for two years now. Being a natural foods enthusiast and into "hippie" beauty products, I was instantly drawn to her booth at Truckee Thursday.

"It's really what I was meant to do," she tells me as she hands out samples from her vendor tent near the east end of Donner Pass Road. It's hard for me to believe from her gentle, down to earth exterior that she is originally from Hollywood, but within a few minutes of talking to her, her inner diva became undeniable.

Asked about her business origins, she explained to me how she developed a nose for fragrance at nine years old when her aunt introduced her to fine french perfumes. As she got older, she found her way into the New Age scene, reading books on natural cosmetics and eventually developing her successful mix of beeswax rose water face cream on her very first try. She used to work as a massage therapist for celebrity clients, often creating skin

Riverside Studios and the High Fives Foundation present the “Lion Heart Art Show”

Riverside Studios, 10060 Donner Pass Rd

A fundraiser for the CR Johnson Healing Center, this show will feature local artists using 12”x12” panels of wood to create masterpieces in any medium. From 4:00pm to 8:00pm during the downtown Truckee event “First Friday” all of the art will be displayed on the walls of Riverside Studios and available for purchase for $100.00 per panel on a first come first serve basis.

A portion of each panel sold will benefit the CR Johnson Healing Center – a program service of the High Fives Foundation that provides resources for athletes in recovery from sport related injuries.
