HSTT's Big Summer Events are Coming Up

If you can’t tell, we love the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe, and we love the parties they throw. Lucky for us (and you), HSTT has two big events out at Squaw this August.

Brews, Jazz, and Funk Fest

First up is the Brews, Jazz & Funk Fest, August 10th and 11th, in The Village at Squaw Valley. Celebrate music and beer at this weekend-long event that benefits the homeless pets of Truckee-Tahoe. On tap, choose from 40 different western beers, including brews from Lagunitas, Deschutes, and Tahoe Mountain Brewing. A $5 donation gets you in, and dogs are welcome!

Saturday’s Music:  Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue – Mojo Green – The Mark Sexton Band – Nigel Hall Band

Sunday’s Music: March Fourth Marching Band – Terraplane – Jellybread – Zigaboo Moeliste and the New Aakesstra

4th Annual Peaks & Paws

Then it’s back to Squaw Valley on August 25th and 26th

Or, If Austin Powers Did Shakespeare

I like Shakespeare, I do. Really. I’ve read enough of his plays enough times to be able to follow along enough to enjoy them. For the most part. That isn’t to say that I haven’t slept through the end of the second act (ok, the whole second act) before. But, really, I do find Shakespeare quite enjoyable. And heck, throw it on a beach with view of Lake Tahoe, and it becomes pretty amazing.

So, I was looking forward to a nice, enjoyable evening when I set out with a group of friends last night to see the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. But wowie, wow…I was blown away!

This ain’t the Shakespeare at Sand Harbor from my youth. I remember being a little girl curled up in a sleeping bag on the sand, drifting in and out of sleep to the sounds of the Tempest after eating too much KFC. Yes, you can still bring your own picnic and wine, and yes, if you sit waaay up high, I think you can still spread out your own blanket. But why would you want to? They have a full restaurant and bar inside the gates, and heck, you can even reserve a café table down front to wine and dine at during the play. (I didn’t realize this beforehand and brought my own sleeping bag, which did come in handy shortly after the sun went down.)

By Pat L. for The Insider

Did you know a new $6.8 million animal shelter is being built in Truckee as we speak? Yep, and it is going to be amazing! Yesterday, I was lucky enough to go on a hardhat tour for the new shelter, and it was definitely the highlight of my week.

Having been to the current animal shelter a couple times, my first impression of the new building is that it’s an entirely different world. The old shelter served its purpose. It kept a roof over the heads of the homeless pets of Truckee. But this town is capable of much more than just serving a purpose. The organization has raised close to $3 million, in partnership with the Town of Truckee, which donated 2.5 acres of land and half of the start-up costs, an additional $3.4 million. While enough money has been raised to start construction, HSTT still needs to raise a final half million.

The new shelter will be much less scary for the pets as well. Most of the holding areas for the adoptable dogs have indoor-outdoor access and spots to mingle. Cats that get along with other cats will be able to cuddle and climb around in the same cages, but there will be plenty of single cages for aggressive cats as well. The facility can hold up to 100 cats, but that’s way too many, so don’t let that
