Arcata-based Naive Melodies is hands down my favorite cover band of all time. For brief moments during their shows (and occasionally after a few drinks), I convince myself I am actually watching Talking Heads play live. I've seen them play three times, and I cannot wait for my fourth Naive Melodies show this Friday at the Crystal Bay Club. They go on at 10 p.m. in the Crown Room, and it's free! I caught up with the band this week for a quick interview.

When did the band form, and how has it evolved?
The band formed in early 2011, mostly just as what seemed like a fun idea to try.  We started off learning a lot of the earlier material, enjoying its edgy, upbeat quirkiness, along with other songs we happened to like.  Much like it actually was for Talking Heads, being a 3-piece posed some limitations, so we'd play songs that fit our musical arrangement, often based on how authentically we could reproduce it.  From the start, there was an overwhelmingly awesome response from the audience, inspiring us

There is much more going on in the area this holiday weekend than just fireworks. From bluegrass to electronic to country, this week is all about the music. For some of us, it just might be better to wait until after the fireworks for our holiday celebration to begin.
Northstar California is hosting it's 8th annual Beerfest and Bluegrass Festival from 4-7 p.m. on Saturday. For only $30, guests can enjoy a souvenir pint glass with complimentary beer tasting from 27 breweries, 21 of them based locally out of California. $1 of each ticket is donated to the Truckee Trails Foundation.
The event usually draws about 2,000 beer drinkers. The beerfest is both family and dog-friendly and is free to anyone not participating in the tastings. There will be balloon twisting for the kids as well as games like corn hole, ring toss, and other backyard games offered for a $1 donation.
This year Stockton-based Snap Johnson & The Knock on Wood Players and Michigan-based Lindsey Lou & the Flatbellies will bring bluegrass to The Village from 3-4:30 and

If you’re willing to brave the snow, there are several exciting art openings and receptions happening in town tonight!

Riverside Studios and the High Fives Foundation present the “Lion Heart Art Show”
4 - 8pm
Riverside Studios, 10060 Donner Pass Rd

A fundraiser for the CR Johnson Healing Center, this show will feature local artists using 12”x12” panels of wood to create masterpieces in any medium. From 4:00pm to 8:00pm during the downtown Truckee event “First Friday” all of the art will be displayed on the walls of Riverside Studios and available for purchase for $100.00 per panel on a first come first serve basis.

A portion of each panel sold will benefit the CR Johnson Healing Center – a program service of the High Fives Foundation that provides resources for athletes in recovery from sport related injuries.

The show will also feature beats from 101.5 FM Truckee Tahoe Radio’s own DJ Treez along with drinks and refreshments.
