Eat + Drink

January 6, 2014 another Mexican restaurant.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's not exactly the newest concept in town, but it's not necessarily a terrible one either. I mean, tacos and tequila...what's not to love?

Let me start by saying I don’t think it’s fair to review any restaurant right after it opens, let alone one that opens during Christmas week in Tahoe. (Which, since I’m on the subject, who is crazy enough to do that?) I’ve been to Marg’s twice now, and while they are obviously working out a few just-opened kinks, I think it’s going to be a cool new option for downtown dining. That, and the margaritas are delicious.

My first trip there, we sat at the bar for lunch and continuously remarked on the restaurant’s hip vibe and the awesome roll up windows that will create a fun indoor-outdoor bar scene come summer. The bartender was friendly and attentive, and the food (salsa sampler, enchiladas, arugula salad) was pretty tasty.

I went back the next day with family in tow. The food took over an hour to come out and was less than stellar (we had to send our rather small, bland tacos back because they were so cold). But, that being said, the margaritas were still delicious and our server was awesome, making the wait as bearable as possible with extra chips, tortillas, and infused tequila.

So, I’m going to

Favorite Summer Al Fresco Lunch Spots

When summer rolls around, I notice that we stop going out to dinner and instead tend to treat ourselves to a midday meal, preferably accompanied by a cold adult beverage and always outdoors. More and more options for al fresco dining have been popping up around Truckee, so we figured we'd let you in our five favorite lunchtime hangouts.

1. The Deck at Dragonfly (10118 Donner Pass Rd, Truckee)
The noodle bowls are cheaper at lunch, and they finally have their new shade cover up!

2. The back patio at Fifty Fifty Brewing Co (11197 Brockway Rd, Truckee)
Three little words: cold delicious beer.

3. El Toro Bravo (10186 Donner Pass Road)
We do miss the trees (why did they cut them down anyway?), but the a la carte tostada is the best lunch deal

Or, If Austin Powers Did Shakespeare

I like Shakespeare, I do. Really. I’ve read enough of his plays enough times to be able to follow along enough to enjoy them. For the most part. That isn’t to say that I haven’t slept through the end of the second act (ok, the whole second act) before. But, really, I do find Shakespeare quite enjoyable. And heck, throw it on a beach with view of Lake Tahoe, and it becomes pretty amazing.

So, I was looking forward to a nice, enjoyable evening when I set out with a group of friends last night to see the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. But wowie, wow…I was blown away!

This ain’t the Shakespeare at Sand Harbor from my youth. I remember being a little girl curled up in a sleeping bag on the sand, drifting in and out of sleep to the sounds of the Tempest after eating too much KFC. Yes, you can still bring your own picnic and wine, and yes, if you sit waaay up high, I think you can still spread out your own blanket. But why would you want to? They have a full restaurant and bar inside the gates, and heck, you can even reserve a café table down front to wine and dine at during the play. (I didn’t realize this beforehand and brought my own sleeping bag, which did come in handy shortly after the sun went down.)
