Look What's New at The Rock

Butcher Shop and Eco-Friendly Salon Coming Soon to Truckee

Brandon Uresky and Jess Curtis of Mountain Valley Meats

Ah, the Rock. The little shopping center that could. Just a tad to far out of town to be on my weekly lunch rotation, but perfectly positioned to capture Martis Valley visitors. Oh, and there is that place that serves damn good beer.

I imagine someday the Rock will be right in the heart of it all, especially if they ever develop the Joerger Ranch parcels. But until then, it’s going to have to keep fighting the good fight to draw folks away from downtown. While Fifty-Fifty, Drunken Monkey, and the Thai restaurant have proved to be solid anchors, the Rock remains a lovely but scrappy little complex that has seen businesses come and go since it opened.

So, while places like Avec and Peluso’s have closed their doors, it’s nice to see new businesses opening up in their place. Coming soon are Mountain Valley Meats (a butcher shop opening in the former Avec space this November) and Coupe Sixty-One (an eco-focused hair salon).

At Mountain Valley Meats, Truckee/Tahoe locals Brandon Uresky and Jess Curtis will offer a selection of homemade sausages and meats from local farms. They will smoke it, chop it, marinate it, and even come to your house to cook it for you.

Together, Brandon and Jess have a combined experience of over 35 years in the food industry. Most recently, Brandon served as executive chef at Northstar Tahoe while Jess worked closely with a butcher for eight months after graduating from the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco.

Joining Mountain Valley Meats at The Rock is Coupe Sixty-One, a unique hair salon with an extreme “go green” commitment. From LED lighting and no-VOC paints to eco blow dryers, recycled hair foils, and organic products to donating hair trimmings to a company that makes and uses natural hair booms to clean up oil tanker spills, Melissa Cox is deeply committed to creating an environmentally friendly and responsible salon.  Coupe Sixty-one is expected to open later this summer.

In the meantime, come meet and mingle with these newcomers this coming Monday, July 15th from 5pm to 7pm at the Truckee Chamber’s “Summer Fun Mixer.”
